Elle Maternity and Labour TENS Machine Hire

What is a TENS machine?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Four small electrode pads are attached to the skin with a sticky adhesive, and pulses are transmitted across the skin to reduce pain sensation.

How does the Elle TENS work?

The Elle TENS works best if used from early labour. Simply apply the 4 pads to your back (as demonstrated in the booklet you will receive with your machine) and switch the unit on. You will be able to adjust the settings to the level of pulse that you need. When a contraction starts, press the boost button for an extra surge, and press it again at the end of the contraction to return to your normal setting. The Elle TENS unit helps your body to release natural pain relieving hormones, called endorphins. It also works by distracting your brain from the pain messages being received from your uterus as the signals from the Elle TENS machine are received much faster than those sent by the uterus, and they effectively ‘shut the gate’ to the labour pain signals.

Why a specific Labour & Birth TENS?

The Elle TENS unit uses larger pads than standard TENS machines, and includes a boost button for contractions. It also has a convenient lanyard to enable easy wearing and access while still remaining mobile in labour.

Is it safe?

Yes, it is designed to be used during labour and birth and poses no risk to you or your baby. It is not recommended to use before your 37th week of pregnancy. You CANNOT use the TENS machine in the water - it must be removed prior to entering the bath or shower. After you have finished your bath or shower, simply dry off thoroughly and you can reattach the electrode pads.

When should I hire the Elle TENS machine?

We recommend booking your hire early, so that you can arrange to receive your TENS by the time you are 37 weeks pregnant. If you are later in your pregnancy we will get the unit to you as soon as possible as long as one is available. Contact us using the button below to make a booking! The machine will be collected after birth.

Where do you offer the Elle TENS hire?

We are currently offering hire in the Latrobe City Council, South Gippsland Council and Baw Baw Shire Council areas only, as the machine will be dropped off to you and picked up after birth, and you will be shown how to use it correctly.

How much does hire cost?

Hire of the Elle TENS machine is $75*. This will include the machine, leads, electrode pads, spare batteries and instruction booklet. Drop off and pick up is also included in the price (only available to people living in South Gippsland, Latrobe City or Baw Baw Shires). Payment is via bank transfer. An invoice will be sent to you after your booking is confirmed.

*NOTE: Should the machine be lost, damaged or stolen you will be liable for a $100 damage fee.
